In our humble opinion, there are few activities that are more amazing than yoga. Not only does it tone the body, it helps release us from the specter of negative emotion and thoughts that tend to weigh us down. Furthermore, these benefits of yoga can be felt after just one session.

Preparing for a successful yoga session presents many challenges and there are many resources to be found on the subject. This holds true for most topics, except for information on how to look your best during yoga class.

One of the best things about yoga is that it helps you relax. But, if you wear jeans or clothing that is too tight, it can make for an uncomfortable experience. You won’t be able to do certain poses in these types of clothes. The yoga clothes which are stretchy and comfortable are preferable.

Some do’s and don’ts’ you may want to consider include:

Loose or super-short shorts: When doing cardio or strength training, shorts are excellent attire. But, when doing yoga (where you’re almost guaranteed to be bending forward and sticking body parts into the air) the last thing on your mind should be whether someone can see your private bits. Opt for fitted full-length or cropped leggings instead.

Old, light-colored, thin, or holey pants: Although our well-worn clothing tends to be the most comfortable, they’ve probably seen better days. Check them for thinning material or holes in the crotch. In addition, light colored bottoms are usually see through, no matter the fabric they are made out of. Opt for darker colored leggings to avoid this issue.

Loose tanks, t-shirts, and short tops: Loose tops are one of the worst offenders because they tend to fall over your head every time you do an inversion. Even loose tanks may distract you, especially if you don’t want to show your belly. Long, fitted tanks will stay put no matter how you twist, flip, or stretch.

Although yoga is composed mostly of “stretches” don’t be surprised if you build up a sweat. This will render your makeup useless and make you look horrible. Can you imagine trying to look your best with mascara running down your face?

So, when it comes to makeup, the common school of thought is that you shouldn’t wear any. Furthermore, putting on makeup can be time-consuming. Your time could be better spent on other things, like getting ready for your next session.

But, what happens if you really want to look good for the aforementioned hot yogi or if you have a date right after your yoga session? These tips will help you look your best without overdoing it:

Start with a fresh face. Line your brows a little and slather on some moisturizer.

Apply BB cream and some powder if you don’t want to get too glowy during your session

Waterproof mascara comes next

Finish with some tinted lip balm


When you have to move your body through a ton of different poses, finding a functional hairstyle (one that doesn’t get in the way) becomes a top priority. Some practitioners try ponytails and top knots, but these can interfere with certain poses.

In our humble opinion, the perfect yoga hairstyle is braided pigtails. This hairstyle keeps your hair neat and together plus it won’t negatively affect any of your poses. Other great ideas include:

Messy bun: A no fuss, no muss hairstyle that won’t get in the way when doing headstands and other inversions.

French braid: This is perfect for gentler practices. It keeps your hair off your face and won’t get in the way when you lay down.

Pony plait: If your French braid skills are lacking, a simple braided ponytail may be just the ticket. It keeps your hair off your face and the plait won’t get in your way.

Halo braid: Not only is this hairstyle adorable, it’s perfect for virtually any yoga session.

Ballet bun: This pulled back and super slick hairstyle is a great choice for intense yoga sessions.

Headband: A thick headband will pull double duty as a sweatband and hair controller. And, since you won’t need hair grips, you won’t have to worry about pins digging into your head when doing poses that require you to lay down.

Following the above tips will ensure that you look your best during your yoga session, even after an hour bending and twisting.

    Great tips, I actually had a great yoga session at the beach last night and I had a bikini on and I felt no restrictions on my body, I always put BB cream on.

    All very good points, I hate the feeling of a tank top falling over your head and exposing your tummy. Definitely prefer tighter but stretchy clothing for yoga 😀 xx
