Hello, everyone!

Traveling is something that you have to do at least once in your lifetime. It does not only broaden your worldview but also gives you a chance to appreciate how other people live. However, traveling can be quite expensive and you really should not pack up and leave without doing all the research and preparation first. There are a lot of ways that you can make your travel experience memorable without emptying your pocket. Here are four things that you should do to save money while traveling in 2018.

Before embarking on your travel, you should start searching for discounted flights weeks or even months before. This will give you a lot of room to work out your itinerary while getting the best price. You can compare different airlines and even get lucky to chance upon a promo fare. There’s a lot of apps that you can use to scan for flights of your choosing so that you are notified whenever the prices are at the lowest.

When you travel to a different city or country, surely you would want to visit every corner of that place and just take everything in. No matter how short your visit is, you can always find time to just get lost in the city, walk around and immerse in the culture. A smart and less expensive way of getting around is through ride sharing. You can book a ride wherever you are at your own pace and time without the hassle of waiting for a bus or a train and without paying a regular taxi fare. Here’s the kicker, you can even use promo codes to use on your rides by visiting You might even be surprised to meet friendly locals who can suggest unique places that only they know.

If you are backpacking across different cities or countries, you can make use of your time by sleeping in an overnight bus, train or ferry instead of booking a hotel. This will save you time and money and you can wake up in the morning at your next destination. Book a ride that is comfortable so that you can get all the rest that you need. A lot of travelers do this and it’s a great way to swap stories and get ideas about new travel destinations.

It doesn’t sound like it’s going to be cheap but you get your money’s worth if you stay at a place for more than just a day. Think about what you would normally do on day one of your travel. Mostly, you check in, unpack and maybe even take a nap. That would leave you half a day to really appreciate the place. That is not enough. Set aside at least a full day for sightseeing, tasting native cuisine and engaging in various activities. You have to remember that traveling frugally does not mean sacrificing the experience.

As always, thank you for visiting and have a great day!

Great tips! I save money while traveling by shopping at a local grocery store for breakfast foods, lunch options, and snacks. That way, I’m only eating out at restaurants for dinners and I can save on the other meals. Plus, it’s fun to explore new-to-me markets and eat more like a local.

Yes, that a great idea to explore local markets and it like a local!

Great tips Helene! We usually save by really doing our research on discounted flights and sometimes staying in Airbnb so we can cook at “home” as well.

I don’t use Airbnb usually but I know a lot of people find them cheaper than hotels!

Excellent tips! I always hunt for the best discounts and deals. I’ve also done ridesharing sometimes but mostly here in Finland. And sleeping while traveling really is handy if you can really sleep well when you travel. For me, that’s not an issue but my fiancée is always not too excited to sleep on the go since he’s really tall and it might be hard for him to sleep in places like planes.

Visiting for a longer time sure is handy – another way I like to do is to have a stopover. For example, we flew very early to Oslo, had 10 hours stopover there and then we carried to Miami overnight. That way we got to see one additional location without booking a hotel or paying any extra. I’ve done those stopovers couple of times and I find it a nice way to explore a bit – this is especially great with more expensive locations since you don’t have to book accommodation in there. 🙂
