Hello, everyone!

Hair extensions are artificial additions to natural hair. Over the years, they have become popular among women for purposes of adding volume and length to natural, human hair. They can also be used for experimental purposes or if you want to change your general look.

The extensions can either be human or synthetic hair. Human hair has a more natural look and is the most popular among women. However, synthetic hair can easily be differentiated from natural hair. Even so, good hair extensions look as natural as possible from color to texture.

The Top 5 Must-Know Things about Hair Extensions

1. The different types of hair extensions

There are different types of hair extensions as follows:

Keratin: this is applied using modern ultrasound technology and lasts three to four months on average. They are best for women who work out regularly.

Clip Ins/Sew Ins: these are temporary extensions that last between six to eight weeks, but can go for up to two years if well taken care of. Furthermore, they are economical because you can reuse them as many times as you want.

Tape In: they last an average of six to eight weeks, but are not suitable for women who workout. The sweat from exercise can weaken the tapes, causing them to fall off.

Micro Rings: these hair extensions are applied on hair strands one after another. However, they do not need glue and chemicals like other types of hair extensions. Moreover, they are easy to apply and maintain.

2. The origin of hair extensions

Do you know where hair extensions originate from? They can either be from Europe or India. With knowledge of the origin of hair extensions, you can choose the right color shade for you. Whereas Indian hair often come in darker shades, European hair is available in light color tones.

3. How to care for hair extensions

Learn how to care for hair extensions before making a purchase. Moisturize hair extensions to help boost and maintain a good natural look. Keep them free from tangles; use a hair brush to comb your hair to remove tangles.

A conditioner can soften and add moisture to your hair extension for easy maintenance and prolonged lifespan. Hair dryers also help in removing excess moisture from the extensions because of the additional volume and length.

4. Requires a professional to fix

Professionals who understand hair care and hair types are able to give a more natural look with every extension they fix on your hair. They can also offer the best advice on the type and shade of hair extension suitable for you. Hairdressers can also advise you on how to take good care of different hair extensions.

5. Hair extensions aren’t for everyone!

Despite being popular and attractive, hair extensions are not suitable for every hair type and for every person. Before opting for hair extensions, consider your hair type, personal taste and daily routine. If you are able to spare a little time regularly to take care of your hair, hair extensions could be just perfect for you.

A professional can advise you on the best type of hair extension based on your hair type. Hair extensions continue to improve in appearance, hence their quality and popularity. With technology always improving, you can expect more and better with hair extensions.

ah, I’ve been looking into hair extensions for some time now but I can’t make up my mind whether I want to really have a piece of hair that’s not mine on my head all the time. I don’t know why it bothers me so much… but they do look lovely when i see them on other girls. And with my hear being naturally thin, this seems like a great solution. Thanks for sharing! xx

I had hair extensions on when I got married to give me extra volume and length obviously, and I found them really fiddly! But then, All I can do with my hair is straighten it and even that is a struggle at times. I’ve recently cut my hair into a bob and might fancy extensions for a change sometime, so cheers for all the info – now I know what to look out for!

Great tips! I’ve never had extensions though I’ve been dreaming of them time to time. At the moment I’m far too busy for them but in couple years from now I could definitely see myself taking extensions for some additional volume!
