Hello, everyone!

There are many reasons that can create a need for you to change residences. Whether the shift is short or long-term, you have to consider a lot of things before you can start packing. Because you will spend most of your time packing and unpacking, the actual move will be easier than the preparation process. It’s time-consuming and requires a lot of attention to detail. However, the more prepared you are, the more effortlessly things will fall into place. What is the best way to achieve this?

It is important to note that every move has different circumstances and challenges. Therefore, taking care of the processes leading up to your move in a timely and organized manner will ensure success. Here are 5 things you can do from the comfort of your home to achieve the smoothest transition possible:

Transfer your Utilities

This is a very important aspect that you need to finalize before you are ready to move. Switching your utilities will involve things such as transferring your water, electricity, and gas billing account, as well as a post office change of address. This is important because it ensures you do not miss any important mail, especially if you receive both personal and business mail at home.

Although most of these things can be done online, it is essential to do them well in advance. If you give your service providers short notice, they might not be able to switch your utilities on time.

Secure Cheap Moving Supplies

Buying moving supplies such as tape and boxes can have a significant impact on your budget. So try to find cheaper alternatives before you have to start packing. Large retailers such as furniture stores are a good place to get free boxes. They are usually on the lookout for safe and effective ways to manage the disposal of shipment boxes. You can also get a large variety of sizes there.

Get Familiar With your New Home

It’s important to know everything about your new home and the environment that it is in. It’s also a great way to see if the furniture you currently have fits in your new home. After your initial visit, make sure you get measurements and compare them with your furniture at home. This will also help you decide how you will arrange and make design improvements to your new home.

You also need to familiarize yourself with the school your children will go to, and the proximity of amenities such as hospitals, fire stations, markets, among others. You can find this information online.

Choose a Moving Truck

Which moving company will you decide to go with? Your choice will depend on several factors, including the rental cost, the distance of the move, and any other miscellaneous expenses. Do research online on the various trucks and offers available, and make sure you read customer reviews. This will give you information that will help you make the best choice possible. Remember to book the truck in advance too.

Get Your Friends to Help

It is not a good idea to ambush your friends with requests to help you move a few days to when you actually want to do it. Informing them beforehand will ensure they free up their time to help you. Try as much as possible to make it fun and interesting for all parties involved so that you do not get tired and bored halfway through.

What are the things you do from home when preparing to move? Let us know in the comment section below.

As always, thank you for visiting and have a great day!

Fantastic tips Helene! I also always start our moves with clearing up anything I want to donate or throw so we have less to take with us.

Earlier we lived in Cambodia for 7 years. Then my husband got transferred to Philippines. Since Cambodia was not my hometown I had to give away a lot of things so we could move here. It was the most stressful time with lots of packing and moving. We did not opt for moving companies even though the office was paying. I just packed all things that I needed in 10-15 suitcases big and small and boarded the plane haha! and saved a lot of money too hehe. 🙂
