Five Things You Should Know About Taking Care of Oily Skin

Hello, everyone!

Shiny skin, persistent pimples, and clogged pores… if these affect your face, then chances are you have oily skin. The key to taking care of your oily skin is in how you manage it. Here are five things that you need to keep in mind.

1. Know what causes your oily skin

Oil in the skin is called Sebum. It is actually an essential element in keeping your skin healthy as it gives protection against dryness. However if your skin’s sebaceous glands produce too much sebum, oily skin happens. Genetics and hormones also play a role. Hormone fluctuations and hereditary factors can determine how your skin reacts to irritants.

2. Make skin care a habit

Wash, tone, moisturize—these three basics of skin care should be part of your daily routine. Washing your face regularly reduces the amount of oil in your skin. A toner provides extra cleansing and can also help in restoring your skin’s pH balance. It can tighten your pores and reduce impurities from the environment that may penetrate your skin. Now you may be skeptic about using a moisturizer at this point for fear that they will make your skin look greasier, but actually, a good moisturizer can soothe and keep your skin moist without the greasy feel.

3. Choose the correct skincare product for your face and body

Before buying an item that you will apply to your skin, check the label and the ingredients. Avoid harsh chemicals that can irritate and dry your skin as they can prompt more production of sebum. Acids may be irritating to some skin types, but some can aid in tackling oily skin like salicylic and glycolic acid. Choose gentle and unscented products as much as possible as they lessen the probability of irritants to your skin. When buying makeup, water-based may be your best option as oil-based products can worsen oily skin symptoms. With every new product that you use for your skin, try it on a small area first to check how your skin will react to it. Watch out for ingredients that are said to be kind to oily skin such as witch hazel, aloe vera, honey, and oatmeal.

4. Prevention is the key

Be mindful of what touches your skin. Avoid rough washcloths as they can stimulate sebum production. It has also been said that diet can affect the state of your skin so keep yourself hydrated and eat nutritious food. Use blotting papers throughout the day to lift off the excess oil from your face. Manage your stress and get enough sleep.

5. Visit a dermatologist

A dermatologist is a doctor that specializes in the care and treatment of the skin. If nothing works, consult one. They can help you single out the factors that trigger your skin’s oil production, and if needed, they can prescribe medicines or medicated skin care products to control them.

Oil production in the skin is inevitable and having oily skin can really be a challenge. However, it is something that can be managed so don’t be worry and get organized on what works best for you.

Loved this post Helene. You have put forward some really important points for taking care of oily skin. I have very oily skin and since I started my proper skincare routine that you have mentioned, it is better. I also use clay based face mask to control the oils. Have a lovely weekend my dear. 🙂
