Southeast Asia is somewhere that you have to visit at some point in your lifetime, for a multitude of reasons. The nature here is beautiful, there are so many vibrant cities to explore, and the people are some of the nicest that you can meet. In fact, Thailand is better known as the ‘land of smiles’, and this is certainly something that can also be said for much of Southeast Asia as a whole.
But where do you begin here, and what are the most exciting places to incorporate into your trip? I’ve noted down five of the best areas to visit, that are especially accommodating to families with young kids!
1. Chiang Mai, Thailand
Whilst Bangkok may be a little bit too overwhelming for young children (and parents who are trying to keep an eye on their kids amongst the hustle and bustle), Chiang Mai is a little more relaxed, and a great place for the whole family to visit. There are plenty of museums and temples here, with less of the non-child-friendly vibe that you would find in places like Pattaya, which are a lot better suited to adult-only travelers. There are also elephant sanctuaries here, which don’t include the cruelty that riding elephants most often does. If you want to experience a bit of city life, and a bit of nature with your family, then head over to Chiang Mai.
2. Halong Bay, Vietnam
Halong Bay is an absolutely stunning place, and it’s one that is suitable for all of the family, too. Scuba diving is a perfect activity for older kids and those travel loving parents, but for those who aren’t too keen on stuff like this, you can just get a boat or a kayak around all of the beautiful islands (or alternatively, relax on the beach). There are also amusement parks and water parks around here, and other activities for kids like cable cars, too. Basically, you and your kids will be spoilt for choice around here, and there’s definitely something on offer in Halong Bay for all of the family, no matter how old your children are and where their interests lie.
3. Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Although capital cities may be a no-go for some families with children, Kuala Lumpur is a good idea if you’re looking to take your kids to an interesting metropolis. Book yourself into a condo complex like Casa Tropicana, and visit the beautiful Batu Caves – a Hindu shrine formed of a multitude of limestone caves, and some awe-inspiring statues – and go up the Petronas Twin Towers, the tallest of their kind in the world. Whilst you’ll have to be more cautious in this big city, there are plenty of more chilled out places here, and again, there is something to pique the interest of every member of your family, irrespective of age.
4. Bali, Indonesia
OK, so we’ve all seen pictures of Bali floating around. This place looks like a beautiful haven, and that’s because it is one. Not only is it the perfect place for parents to relax, but there are also water parks like Waterbom to keep the kids busy. On top of this, there is a surf school, a safari, and even river rafting. This place really does offer a great combination of relaxation and activities for families, and it’s certainly a little more interesting than some of the generic holiday destinations. The beaches here are beautiful enough to keep your kids entertained for days, too, so definitely add Bali to your family travel list if you can!
5. Siem Reap, Cambodia
Siem Reap in Cambodia is home to Angkor Wat, a complex of temples that is one of the largest religious sites in the world. Not only is this impressive for people of any age (well, I can’t guarantee that super young kids will enjoy it) but there is something about Cambodia that just screams family-friendly. The people are warm and open, and the nature here is simply something else. The food is delicious, and there are plenty of beaches that your kids will just love. Siem Reap is a perfect choice if you’re looking for a place in Southeast Asia that is a little bit more chilled out, and away from the chaos of a city break elsewhere.
So, if you’re looking for exciting family-friendly places to visit in Southeast Asia, then why not take a trip to some of these five beautiful areas, that your kids will enjoy, and so will you? Say goodbye to mundane holidays, and hello to the wonders of Asia!

As always, thank you for visiting and have a great day!
