Remember, after the hair extension procedure, or preferably before it, to gain knowledge about hair extension care.
To enjoy beautiful hair extensions for a long time, you need to take care of them properly. Proper care of extensions is particularly important for a beautiful and natural hairstyle. Remember that hair extensions are natural but already dead, so they do not have the source of natural moisture that our hair has. In this article I will show you step by step how to care for your extensions to be beautiful and shiny for longer.
Care of extensions – proper brushing
Hair should be combed several times a day. Regular combing of extended hair allows to keep it in perfect condition. Additionally, while combing the hair, we clean it from the settling particles of dust and cosmetic residues. It is best to buy a brush designed for extensions so you can comb your hair faster and easier.
This should always start from the ends upwards – paying special attention to the joints. Do not jerk your hair while combing as this can result in a single pulling out of your hair. If your hair is long, it is best to tie it into a braid overnight.
Washing and care of extensions
The hair used for the extensions is dead, without bulbs. Such hair is even more fragile and delicate than our hair. Proper washing will give it beauty and you will be able to wear it longer. If the washing is not done properly, the strands of artificial hair will be damaged and twisted. There are several factors to remember, which will help you take care of your hair during washing, e.g. you should comb your hair well before each wash.
It is best to wash your hair in the shower, because water flows down from the top, so it does not get tangled up. The most important is the temperature of the water: it must be lukewarm – not too hot, not too cold. Wash your hair by moving your fingers with the shampoo from top to bottom – never do the washing in a circular motion that will tangle the hair.
The most dirty hair is next to the scalp, that’s why we massage this part of the hair with our fingers, the rest of the hair is enough for the foam to flow down. After washing, comb the hair with your fingers and gently drain it with a towel. Important: Do not rub your hair with a towel!
Moisturizing – the most important aspect of care
Moisturizing is one of the most important things you need to do to keep your hair attached. Hair, as mentioned above, has no bulbs, so it is dead and you need to moisturize it heavily. Strongly moisturizing and regenerating masks for dry and damaged hair will be best.
Shampoos should also be moisturizing. Using appropriate conditioners and shampoos will guarantee beautiful, shiny and moisturized hair. The conditioner should be left on your hair for up to 5 minutes, combing the conditioner with a wide-toothed comb. After this time the conditioner should be rinsed.
When using the mask, it is best to apply it 2 centimeters below the joints. Apply it like the conditioner: for 5 minutes. Smoothing masks are best – apply more than you would do with your live hair. After 5 minutes, rinse the mask with cool water so that the product does not come into contact with the natural hair folds. After rinsing the mask you can additionally apply a conditioner without rinsing or a regeneration serum.
Care of extended hair – proper drying
Safe care of hair extensions should be based on proper drying. It is best to gently dry your hair and leave it to dry, but if you don’t have time, you will have to follow a few rules. Never rub your hair with a towel, just drain it gently. It is best to use an ionic dryer to dry your hair and always dry it with cool air from the roots to the ends. This will close the scales and smooth the strands. When drying, do not brush or comb your hair with your fingers only. You can style your hair when it is dry.
Styling and suitable cosmetics
Hair extensions can be straightened and curled. However, everything has to be done with certain rules. When it comes to hair curling, it will be safer to do this treatment with rollers. If you do not have time and need to use a curling iron, it is best if it is set at 160-180 degrees.
The same temperature must be set when using a flat iron. Remember not to keep your equipment long on the same strands of hair. The most important thing to remember is not to straighten or curl your joints. We always start styling your hair with thermo-protective cosmetics.
Hair styling products should not contain alcohol and hairspray and mousse are not recommended. Hair extensions should not be backcombed, as this may cause the hair to twist.
